It’s a narrow window to convince readers that you’re as awesome and helpful as you know you are. However, if you’re making these common content marketing mistakes, it’s likely that within those ten to twenty seconds…

Businesses of all sizes use blogs and content marketing to help drive traffic to their sites, boost sales and generate organic leads.

Why does it matter if they click away from your site?  Well, every click away means you could be losing money and valuable leads.  “Content is king” is far more than a pretty phrase. 

Fun fact!

Businesses that use blogs as a form of lead generation generally get 67% more leads than businesses who don’t.  Delivering addicting content is one of the best marketing tools around. 

Even veteran bloggers tend to make some serious mistakes that drive people away from their blogs, often without them even knowing it. 

If you can fix the following common mistakes, you can deliver visually stunning content that helps keep eyes on the blog longer, creates a connection with your readers, and gives you a well needed SEO boost. 

Issue 1: Large Blocks of Text

This is probably one of the biggest issues in content marketing today. 

Large, wordy paragraphs look fabulous on paper, but digital marketing values short paragraphs that are maybe a sentence or two in length.  This allows your readers to see and absorb your information faster regardless of what device they use.

Basically, everything you learn in school about writing paragraphs and their structure: throw it out the window.  It’s not conducive to easy to read and skim over content. 

So, in a nutshell, more white space in your content is a good thing. It’s easier to read and write.

Here’s the breakdown for you:

•    Shorten your paragraphs: 3-4 sentences MAX.

•    White space is your friend

•    Use lists to break up your text more (see, it works!)

•    Sentence fragments are fine in the context of having a more casual, personable tone -- just don’t go crazy with them.

•    Go heavy on quality content and very light on the fluff!

•    Use a conversational, casual tone for your writing

•    Use that tone to create a connection to your readers

•    Use readable size font (aka don’t use really small font)

The last one is one of the biggest peeves on the internet. 

Think about it, would you rather read an article with thousands of words in size 10 font or size 14 that’s easy and clean to read? 

That’s what I thought. 

Issue 2: Use quality photos for every blog

You don’t have to be a pro photographer to get amazing photos for your blog.

The internet has a bunch of free resources that you can take advantage of to have amazing looking images to enhance your content.

•    Picjumbo
•    Negative Space
•    Pexels
•    Stocksnap.io
•    Canva (an amazing tool that helps you create all kinds of images)

Now that you can find high quality images, don’t just fling images without a plan.

Here are some pointers:

•    Use a lot of images in your content

•    Infographics are key! (Infographics get 3x more likes and shares than any other content type)

•    Charts and graphs are perfect when necessary.
